July 3-August 2: Rhythms of Life, a new show featuring ceramics by Yiu-Keung Lee and textiles by Lois Bryant, Sally Houck, and Marilyn M. Prucka. Each of these artists is inspired by the interaction between humans and their environment. Their artwork expresses their responses to life around them and the interplay between natural and constructed environments. Bryant’s recent series of weavings, “The Ground Beneath My Feet,” takes its imagery from asphalt, cracked cement, footprints, and tire tracks, surfaces usually overlooked or written off as ugly. Prucka finds inspiration in the River Raisin near her Monroe home. Her quilt series “Gatherings” is based on photographs she took of a puddle filled with windblown pine needles and reflected sky. Lee’s ceramic sculptures are concerned with the relationship between a human head and other forms, often components inspired by his children’s toys, objects, and drawings, and how these things are manipulated within their environment. Houck’s digital jacquard weavings often feature imagery taken from the garlic grown on her family’s farm. She uses unusual vantage points and close-ups to create abstracted designs. Opening reception Friday, July 11, 5:30-7:30 PM.
September 4-27: It Grows on Trees--II; creative woodwork made from ash trees and other local or salvaged timber. Opening reception September 5. September 4-27 at Riverside Off-Center: Trumpets of Democracy: Blood for Oil! will showcase acrylic paintings on wood and sculpture by Ed Stopke of Ann Arbor. The show is Stopke’s very personal artistic response to the ongoing war in Iraq. In his artist’s statement, Stopke poses the questions, “What else am I to think, paint or express? Should I show pretty flowers or beach scenes as if all is well and my country is peace-loving and innocent?” Stopke uses a sophisticated color palette and streamlined designs to belie the horror of his chosen subject. Please join us for a reception with the artist on Friday, September 5, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM, at the Riverside Off Center, 64. N. Huron Street. Be sure to check the Calendar of Events for upcoming exhibits. Need for volunteer Gallery Docents |
